Simply Business – We are looking for an Engineering Lead & Senior Developers!

We are in the Fintech space and use technology and bleeding-edge data capability to create the best possible experience for startups and self-employed people who are seeking to insure their businesses. We've taken an old-fashioned and stuffy industry like insurance and turned it on it's head by bringing it into the online age and making it easy and straightforward for our customers to understand and buy protection for their business. We want our customers to sleep easy knowing they are covered so that they can get on with their main job of running their business. We do this via our best in class and award winning online price comparison / brokerage platform.

We currently have two different roles available. We are looking to hire both Engineering Leads and Senior Developers:

The role of Engineering Lead:

  • Leading a small project team of Engineers based in London and Boston (from our London office)
  • Delegating effectively to other engineers and supporting the team by removing blockers
  • Working with team members to identify areas for learning and helping them grow in these areas
  • Being hands on in developing our products using best practices, appropriate tools, and technologies
  • Working closely with Product Owners to flesh out requirements, highlight risks, prioritise tasks/stories and allocate time and effort effectively
  • Leading on technical discussions and applying suitable design techniques 
  • Highlighting areas for continuous improvement and driving their prioritisation
  • Championing Agile methodologies and being proactive in suggesting new tools, technologies and ways of working

The role of 'Senior Developer':

  • Being hands on in developing our products using best practices, appropriate tools, and technologies
  • Working within small cross functional collaborative project teams (Dev, QA, Product Owners and other Business stakeholders), helping to clarify requirements at the onset of projects and suggesting different and relevant technical approaches
  • Championing Agile processes whilst creating amazingly useful systems in a collaborative way for our customers
  • Highlighting areas for continuous improvement & driving their prioritisation
  • Being proactive in suggesting new tools, technologies and ways of working

What we are looking for

  • Strong programming skills (in any language). We are tech agnostic when hiring so we hire people from Ruby, Java, C#, PHP, Python and various other backgrounds in the past. You just need to be happy to cross over to Ruby if you join us - and we'll support you with that
  • Experience leading a small team of Developers - this is required if you are applying for the 'Engineering Lead' position. Previous experience of leading a team is not needed to apply for the 'Senior Developer' position.
  • The ability to challenge us! We love people who come in and challenge us and not be afraid to raise questions and help us improve.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills to liaise with various different teams
  • An advocate of engineering best practices
  • A strong desire to work with business teams and to understand the business side of our product development. We see tech and business as ‘one team’ here – all working together to reach the same goal of creating awesome products to serve our customers best.
  • An understanding and appreciation of Agile methodologies

Our tech stack

We are currently using technologies such as Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Scala, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Puppet, Boxen, AWS, Docker, Cucumber, RSpec, Jasmine, SASS, HAML, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Redux ,amongst others. You do not need to be experienced in this tech stack to apply. We are technology agnostic when hiring.
