The Role

We’re looking for an engineering manager that is deeply passionate about helping engineers achieve their goals and become the best they can be. This role is ideally suited to an experienced engineering lead looking to take the next step, or someone currently at manager level looking for an exciting new role to excel in.

You’ll be an engineering leader of one or more teams, taking accountability for their professional growth and the quality of their work. Your focus will be on helping engineers by guiding them through hard times and celebrating their successes. In addition to that, you will also ensure the work your teams ship is high quality by improving processes we use to produce an excellent product.

We’ve grown quickly within the last year to our current team size of 12 which is made up of the VP of Engineering, Product Manager, Product Designer, Data Analyst and 8 engineers split between backend, fullstack and frontend specialisations. We’ve got big plans to add another new engineering team this year.

We value a range of perspectives, with each person bringing something different to a dynamic, fast-paced environment where everyone's background and experience combine to make the team stronger.

What you'll be doing

  • Line management. Building strong working relationships with your direct reports to understand their career objectives, identify opportunities for growth and help establish their career path(s).

  • Mentoring and coaching. Helping engineers achieve their goals, avoid burnout, and become the best engineers they can be through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback and proactive support.

  • Recruitment. Taking a prominent role in hiring across engineering and product as we build out a third cross-functional team in 2021.

  • Improving processes and best practices. Working with multiple product managers and senior engineers to ensure deployments go smoothly – make sure high technical standards are met and we use the best working practices.

  • Hands-on engineering - While we’re not expecting you to spend all your time writing code, you will lead from the front by contributing to architecture discussions, helping the team debug issues, and often tackling user stories yourself.

  • Recent experience as an engineering manager, mentor or in a technical leadership role

  • Prior role as a hands-on engineer

Nice to haves

  • Experience with our tech stack, i.e. one of React, PHP, AWS

  • Previously helped recruit and build new engineering teams from scratch

If you don't meet all of the requirements here, please still apply! We're always looking to hire and the team will be growing even more over the coming months. So if you're not the perfect fit now you could well be in the near future.
