Makers Academy

marketing community pr engagement London

Location: London (Aldgate)

Salary: £30k-£40k, based on experience

Contract: Full-time

Reporting to: Sales & Marketing Director

Everyone deserves a job they love. Makers Academy re-trains people as software developers, then helps them find that job.

You deserve a job you love. We’ve got one for you.

We’re increasing the number of people in our marketing team - you’ll help us by developing a strategy to engage our three communities, through social media, partnerships and PR.

You’re creative yet detail-oriented and like getting things done. You’re collaborative yet autonomous and enjoy being given clear targets and the freedom to develop your own tactics. You’re obsessed with understanding your customers, playful in your attempts to deliver to their needs, daring in execution and adaptable in your ability to create highly engaged communities and drive exponential growth.

You want to be more than just a community expert, copywriter or marketeer: you love finding creative ways to sell products and services; you can see there’s a problem with digital skills education and you’re excited to form part of the solution; and you want a platform to accelerate your growth as a person and a professional.

You’ll have complete freedom to act in a way that you believe is the best for the company. You’ll have a genuine say in the way the business is run, and the environment in which you work. You’ll be encouraged to identify problems and solve them; and to seek out new opportunities and pursue them.

There are 3 types of work in this role (in prioritized order):

  1. Working with the Makers Academy applicants, alumni and hiring partners to create a happier, larger, more engaged and higher quality community

  2. Manage our social media channels both B2B and B2C.

  3. Build relationships with industry journalists; creating, executing and measuring media campaigns.

When doing (1), you’ll be:

  • Supporting the Makers Academy community through events, newsletters, and promotional content.

  • Working with the rest of the MA marketing team to create compelling social campaigns aimed at driving a higher volume of applications from B2C and B2B markets.

  • Leveraging our community to support current and future marketing campaigns

When doing (2), you’ll be:

  • Engaging with messages across all social media channels (Facebook, LinkedIn & Twitter)

  • Analysing new ways of driving applications and new business through social media

  • Being the first point of contact for future applicants and hiring partners

When doing (3), you’ll be:

  • Ensuring MA is well represented in the media

  • Creating media campaigns aimed at growing the Makers Academy brand

  • Measuring brand growth and brand perception

Some other skills that would be nice to have:

  • We partner with lots of companies to run scholarships… Experience building brand partnerships would be great

  • If you have design skills, or are interested in developing your design skills, we definitely won’t complain

  • It would be great if you had at least *some* understanding of tech / tech education / the tech industry… But it’s not a dealbreaker.

When you’re not doing those things, you’ll be:

  • Working in a company that’s pushing the limits of self-management, experimenting with which company structure is best for the information age and beyond;

  • Growing as a person, by learning radical transparency, vulnerability, the growth mindset, emotional intelligence, 'non-violent communication', hard truths about yourself, and how to give and receive feedback honestly and productively;

  • Able to do yoga twice a week and guided meditation every day;

  • Playing all sorts of board games, card games, video games, table tennis and Nerf wars;

  • Working in the hammock, on the bean bags or sofa;

  • Surrounded by a diverse group of incredibly smart, motivated people, who all really care about doing the very best they can for our students, for our hiring partners and for each other.

We’re the best at what we do, according to our clients (both students and employers), our competitors (they all admit it), industry bodies, the press and the government. We can only get better by working with you.

Everyone should have a job they love. Including you.

Location: Our academy in Spitalfields, London.

Salary: Negotiable depending on previous (relevant) experience. After that, you'll set your own salary.

Hours: You choose.

Holiday: Unlimited, paid.

Hierarchy: Makers Academy is a company built on trust, rather than fear (read more on our blog). This has variously been described as: self-management; teal; holacracy; and emergent hierarchy.

Interview process:

20 mins phone interview

60 mins with two people from the marketing team

60 mins with the senior leaders, and a half day meeting the wider team (if successful at stage 2)
