Part-Time Finance Director, Opendesk
Location: East London
Salary: £50000 to £55000 pro-rata
Opendesk is a fast growing technology and design company. We’re an online furniture brand that’s looking to change the way products are designed and made. What’s different about Opendesk furniture is that it’s designed to be distributed as a digital file, downloaded and made locally through a network of digital fabricators - skilled makers with CNC-machining capabilities. Through this model we’re already selling locally-made furniture to a range of workspace customers, from startups and SME’s to established international brands like Nike, Google and General Electric.
To continue our growth we’re now looking for a committed, part-time Finance Director reporting into our Co-CEOs, Nick and Joni. We envisage the role taking 1-2 days a week, with some flexibility. You will help us grow our business, manage our financial targets and accounting, and develop our our financial strategy to scale. We’re looking for a qualified Accountant with experience of working within and helping to grow a fast-moving SME at a senior level. If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
What would I be working on?
We’re looking for someone who can help us keep a tight rein on our cash burn, plan for and manage tax liabilities, & assist us to strategically prepare for the next stage of our growth. Key areas of focus will be:
Board and Investor reporting: To provide accurate and timely reporting to the management team, Board and our broader investor community.
Financial and commercial KPIs: Capturing and validating key business metrics: critically, our Cost Per Acquisition and Cost To Serve, alongside validation of the scalability of our model - in preparation for a funding round at end 2017.
Strategic advice on future growth: To provide strategic input on the growth of our business and evolution of our business model as we begin to scale into new markets. You will need to be happy operating at a strategic level, carrying out research and proposing new directions as needed.
Supporting our bookkeeper, Erica: who manages all our day-to-day transactions and data input into Xero, our accounting software, and various other tracking tools.
What would my responsibilities be?
As Finance Director your main responsibilities would include:Providing leadership to optimise the company’s financial performance & overall control & development of the accounting function
Preparation of annual accounts, reporting to the Board at quarterly Board meetings to update on company finances, accounting strategy and progress
Contributing fully to the development of strategic plans for the future growth of the business
Ensuring that company financial systems are robust and fully compliant, & regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met,
Ensuring corporate budgeting processes are carried out diligently and reviewed at regular intervals
Managing our Corporate Finance and company policies regarding capital increases, debt, taxation, and equity
What experience and skills would I need?
We’re looking for:
A highly qualified and competent accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CPA)
Experience working with similarly sized startups, particularly with a view to international growth
Experience working with marketplace businesses and relevant business models
Strong IT skills, with a view to new technologies and practices
An ability to handle critical decision-making and accept responsibility and accountability
High integrity and openness, combined and a commitment to good governance, to fit with our Open Charter
A good leader able to operate at both strategic and operational levels
Where would I work?
Most of the Opendesk team are based out of our studio in East London (situated along a stretch of Hackney known as the ‘Maker Mile’). Given the seniority of the Finance Director role, we’d like you to join us here in London and be based in the office. We feel this is important as you would need to be able to manage a team and work closely with others day to day, including the co-CEO’s.
