Product Designer (6 month contract) is an entertainment platform for kids, building off one of the most loved children’s comics in the UK. We’re making sites that kids love, without exposing them to the problems found on the ‘grown up web’.

The Beano comic is still printed every week, it’s proudly celebrating it’s 81st birthday in 2019 and has a growing readership which we’re super proud of - if you read it as a kid it’s probably really similar to how you remember! On the other hand is a little different - 1m kids visit every month for content which is designed to hilariously and authentically reflect their lives back at them, which means we could be talking about anything from slime to Star Wars! This is based on continuous research, testing and insight gathering to discover what kids want to watch, read and play then delivering it to them on a daily basis.

The Challenge

Many elements of the digital economy are simply not allowed on sites which are directed at kids. Beano adheres to some strict regulation, COPPA & GDPR for Kids. To succeed in becoming a successful business, we have to re-invent virality, user acquisition, retention, advertising, and eCommerce, while respecting the reasons why these rules are there — kids deserve privacy and appropriate content, without the “track everything” style marketing that is visible on the wider web.

What will you be working on?

We’re now looking for a new Product designer to join the Beano digital product team and help us continuously improve, design new features, iterate on’s UX/UI and generally make it a super sticky destination.

‘Kid’ centered design is incredibly important to us and new features are inspired by regular user research and testing. We follow an agile methodology, frequent retrospectives and a test, measure, then act approach to the incremental improvement of

  • Review and incrementally improve the UX/UI of based on user research and data with a focus on key engagement metrics such as retention.

  • Design new features, user flows and UI elements and document as user stories alongside our product owner.

  • Champion new ideas & best practices to continually improve our design processes.

What about you? 

You’ll have 2+ years experience of:

  • Continuous improvement & iteration on the UX/UI of a digital product, designing features to meet user goals and drive long term engagement.

  • Focus on design for the web including interaction design, UI design and creation of user journeys.

Bonus points if you have an interest and/or experience in:

  • Creating and/or maintaining design systems

  • Working in an agile environment

  • Design for performance and accessibility

  • Design for kids
