Sifted is looking for a full stack developer to join our fast-growing team of journalists, engineers, designers and data analysts, and help us build a new media platform for Europe’s startup community.
At Sifted, we’re taking a fresh look at Europe’s startup and tech world, and building a diverse readership and community of founders, investors, innovators, thinkers and makers. We want to become the essential, trusted and independent resource for European tech – and our early team members will play a big role in making that happen.
We’re backed by the Financial Times and based at its London HQ, but we work as a small, nimble, independent team. We value interpersonal skills as much as coding skills, and care deeply about supporting each member of our team’s personal growth and development.
You’ll work with our tech lead Duncan and design lead Gaetan as the third member of our product team.
Your day-to-day work will include:
Daily standups and bi-weekly sprint planning meetings
Writing and maintaining good-quality code which is released very frequently via Continuous Integration
Pair programming by default. When it’s not practical to pair, participating in code review via GitHub.
Contributing to technical decisions affecting both the product itself and the technical architecture of the system
Working alongside journalists to come up with ways to present news, features and data in the most compelling way possible
Providing inputs for, and parsing outputs from, user research exercises
As this is a new project, you will have significant say in the technologies we use. While we expect to use a modern front-end framework like React, if you preferred to work in ClojureScript or TypeScript, for example, that would be welcome.
At least 2 years’ professional experience as a software developer
Experience with React or Vue.js
Experience with agile development methodologies like Test-Driven Development and Extreme Programming
Proficiency with git
Solid grasp of basic networking technologies such as HTTP and DNS
Nice to have
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
Experience with Ruby
An interest in journalism, especially data-driven journalism
An eye for design
The next 12 months
Sifted is a new company with 10 employees. Over the next year we will grow far beyond that, picking up journalists across Europe and expanding our tech team here in London. As this happens, you’ll have the chance to level up your technical abilities as well as — if you like — your leadership skills.
